At CLI Design, we believe that lighting plays a crucial role in shaping both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of any space, especially in residential environments. When we partnered with AXIS Architecture + Design on the Weingart Towers project, our goal was to create a lighting plan that not only enhanced energy efficiency but also supported the well-being of residents and contributed to a safer, more inviting community atmosphere.
Weingart Towers is a state-of-the-art Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) development in Los Angeles, designed to meet the city’s growing need for affordable housing. Through this project, we were able to showcase how smart lighting solutions can be seamlessly integrated into multi-family housing to optimize both comfort and sustainability.
The Foundation of Our Lighting Design: Features of Weingart Towers
Any well-crafted lighting design must be tailored to the existing needs and layout of a project. The Weingart Towers development includes 318 units, with a focus on providing permanent supportive housing for a diverse population. The building consists of studio apartments, one-bedroom units, and units designated specifically for veterans.
Key features of the building include:
- 228 studio apartments
- 47 one-bedroom units
- 40 dedicated units for veterans
- 3 one-bedroom apartments for on-site property managers
These residential spaces are complemented by a wide range of state-of-the-art amenities, including:
- A fitness center
- A career center
- Computer labs and library
- Laundry facilities and rooftop terraces with gardens.
The lighting design supports these areas by balancing functional needs, such as energy-efficient illumination for high-traffic spaces, with a warm, inviting ambiance in the community areas.
Lighting Strategy: Prioritizing Comfort, Safety, and Efficiency
The lighting design for Weingart Towers was based on four key principles: comfort, energy efficiency, safety, and aesthetic integration. These principles guided the decision-making process and led to lighting solutions that support the community-oriented environment of the development.
Comfort & Warmth
We used soft, ambient lighting in the private units to create a welcoming and cozy environment. In the common areas, lighting was designed to encourage interaction while maintaining a soft, relaxed atmosphere that fosters a sense of community.
Energy Efficiency
Given the scale of the project, reducing energy consumption was a top priority. By integrating LED technology and motion sensors in both private and public spaces, the system reduces energy waste, decreases maintenance costs, and aligns with sustainability goals.
Safety & Security
Lighting was strategically placed in key areas like hallways, stairwells, and outdoor spaces to enhance visibility and ensure resident safety.
Aesthetic & Functionality
Lighting was not only practical but also designed to enhance the architectural features and functionality of the space. Fixtures were selected to complement the modern, clean design of the building, helping the lighting integrate with the overall aesthetic vision.
Innovative Lighting Solutions at Weingart Towers
We worked closely with the team at Weingart Towers to bring in lighting solutions that are both innovative and practical. Here’s a breakdown of the key lighting technologies we implemented.
1. Smart LED Lighting
To maximize energy efficiency and flexibility, we implemented smart LED lighting systems throughout the building. LEDs were chosen for their low energy consumption and long lifespan, which will reduce operational costs and maintenance needs over time. These systems also feature dimming capabilities that adjust brightness levels based on time of day and occupancy, offering both customizability and energy savings.
2. Human-Centric Lighting
Human-centric lighting was integrated into the design of both private units and common areas. This type of lighting mimics natural daylight, promoting well-being and helping regulate circadian rhythms. In the residential units, warm lighting (3000K) creates a relaxing and welcoming feel, while daylight-mimicking LEDs in the common spaces help residents feel energized and focused throughout the day.
3. Community & Safety Lighting
In addition to providing functional lighting, we used accent lighting to highlight architectural features and create a welcoming atmosphere. Strategic outdoor lighting at entrances, pathways, and gathering spaces enhances visibility, contributing to overall safety and improving the sense of security for residents. The thoughtful integration of lighting helps residents feel both safe and connected to their environment.
